We pass along a request from Ambi-friends associated with the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco to visit and support their instituition.

Since 1984, the Cartoon Art Museum has produced over 100 exhibitions and 20 publications, all advancing their mission to preserve, document, and exhibit this unique and accessible art form, whether in animation, graphic novels, or comics. Unfortunately, the museum has hit a rough patch just as they prepare to celebrate our 25th anniversary. While the education programs are bringing in new grants and the relaunched museum store is drawing in more visitors, they need immediate help to keep the lights on and pay the rent as they move past the post-holiday season.

Consider making a donation today so the Cartoon Art Museum can continue offering top-notch comic and cartoon-related exhibitions and outreach programs to the public. And if you aren’t already a member, please consider joining. Don’t let this milestone year for the museum be the last. To make your donation, contribute through PayPal at cartoonart.org/support.html. Or call (415) 227-8666 ext. 300 or email office@cartoonart.org. Your contributions are tax-deductible.

Visit http://www.cartoonart.org/ to find out more and to preview their current exhibitions on The Art of CORALINE (actually, it starts 1/24), The TOTORO Forest Project, Gene COLAN: Visions of a Man without Fear and Small Press Spotlight Featuring: Ryan Claytor.

Dazzlin’ Camouflage on Parade

dazzle1.jpg

The Ambidextrous Winter 2008 “Secrets” issue featured a High Concept piece Dazzlin’ Camouflage by Illinois Institute of Technology Institute of Design’s Hugh Musick on Dazzle, a technique painting warships in dizzying patterns to ward off enemy gunships most recently made popular by the British and American navies in WWI.

RISD now has an upcoming exhibit and symposium on the subject. The “Bedazzled” Exhibit and the “Artists at War: Exploring the Connections Between Art and Camouflage” Symposium will examine the questions surrounding the relationship of art and camouflage. The exhibit is in the Fleet Library at RISD and the symposium will be on February 14, 2009 from 2-4 pm nearby on their campus.
